This literature review was conducted in order to learn more about technologies and adaptations that are being used with students with disabilities to help them better access their education and educational environment. The James Madison University online journal database was used to search "assistive technology AND multiple disabilities." The articles needed to be peer-reviewed, written in English, published between 2000 and 2017, and focused on students grades preschool through 12th grade. After reading the abstracts of many search results, 15 articles were selected. Further reading showed that two of those articles did not fully meet the criteria of the literature review and ultimately, 13 articles were reviewed for this literature review.
ISTE Standards supported by this Instructional Handout include:
4. (a): This literature review topic was spurred by the realization, in an informal needs assessment, that my knowledge of technology use with students with disabilities is limited to what I am doing in my classroom and what other teachers in my school are doing. This research allowed me to look at what other professionals are doing with technology to help students better access their education and educational environment. This added knowledge will have a positive impact on the students I am working with.
6. (b, c): After a reflection of my knowledge and what professional development I was in need of, the topic of this literature review was chosen to help fill in the gaps in my knowledge. The knowledge of technologies used and the methodology of how they were implemented to include possible adaptations needed will allow me to better serve the students that I work with. It will also help me as I work with other special education teachers allowing us to better brainstorm and problem solve in the best interest of the students we serve.
